Amy Tiffany Hemingway is a contemporary oil painter and visual storyteller with a focus on portraiture. With bold lines and a sharp focus on the human gaze, the works capture a powerful sense of defiance.
Her practice investigates the intersection of classical portraiture and contemporary surrealism, focusing on how internal states manifest across the human body. The artist uses the portrait as a site of transformation, juxtaposing flesh with disruptive, foreign elements.
She holds a Masters degree in Theology from the University of Oxford, and attended drawing classes at the Ruskin School of Art. She worked as an Archaeological Illustrator for ten years in the UK and France, before moving to Africa for several years.
Her work has exhibited at the Nassau County Museum of Art, New York, and features in private collections in Australia, Canada, Croatia, Dubai, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Miami, Long Island (the Lachaise Foundation), Romania, South Africa and the UK.

MODIGLIANI & THE MODERN PORTRAIT
Nassau County Museum of Art, New York, USA
22 July-5 November 2023
MUSEUM | PRESS 1 | PRESS 2 | PRESS 3
This show combines the brilliant colors and powerful linear style of Modigliani with works by contemporaries from the School of Paris, including Picasso, Man Ray, Matisse, Munch, Klimt, Lachaise, Laurencin, Foujita, van Dongen and Soutine to name a few, bringing to life the bohemian heyday of Montparnasse in Modigliani’s day. It also extends the idea of portraiture as Modigliani changed it, to include contemporary artists such as Andy Warhol, Eric Fischl, David Hockney, Amy Tiffany Hemingway and Inès Longevial. The legacy of Modigliani’s psychological depth resonates in the studios of our own time.
